Crowley for HilliardMeet the Candidate
Can you tell our members a little bit about your journey to filing as a candidate?
I have been a teacher for 15 years and was one of the 2020 Outstanding Educators of the Year in my district. I am married to a teacher and we have two children in Hilliard City Schools. I decided to run for The Hilliard School Board after learning that there were no educator’s on my children’s Board of Education. I truly believe that every Board of Education should have an educator sitting at the table. Educators just naturally put children first. I believe that having an educator, like me, on The Board will help keep students at the heart of all decision making.
Tip O’Neill famously said that “all politics is local.” What are the top two issues your community faces today and how do you plan to address them?
I think the two biggest issues in my community right now are covid and diversity, equity and inclusion. I plan to address the issue of covid by doing whatever is necessary to keep children safe. We want students to be able to learn in person so it is important to follow safety guidelines and wear masks. We must listen to health officials and trust scientists. As for diversity, equity and inclusion, it is important for our schools to make all students feel welcome and create a culture that celebrates diversity and promotes inclusion for all students, staff and families.
What stands out in our values as most important to you and your experience (or expected experience) in public office? Our values are:
∙ Economic empowerment
∙ Equity and independence
∙ Dominion over our bodies
∙ Access to education
∙ Safe communities in which to live and raise our families
The two values that stand out the most to me are access to education and safe communities in which to live and raise our families. I believe that all children deserve a world class education and educational opportunities and children cannot learn when they do not feel safe.
What does a Matriots PAC endorsement mean to you and your campaign?
The Matriots PAC endorsement means so much to me because I believe in the strength and empowerment of women. When one woman succeeds, we all succeed. It is important as women that we lift each other up! We are here to love and support each other and knowing that I have the support of The Matriots and all the incredible women involved in this organization gives me the motivation to push ahead! I am honored and humbled to receive this amazing endorsement and grateful for all the resources this group is able to provide for my campaign.
